The General Federation of Independent Trade Unions in Palestine is a federation of trade and professional unions in West Bank and Gaza Strip. The members of the federation are democratic unions in their organizational structure and their practice; their decision making is independent from the government, employers and political parties.
Why was GFITUP established?
The establishment of GFITUP came out of the need and desire of the Palestinian labor movement to effectively play its natural role in the attainment of workers’ rights and positively affect economy, social and political progress. In fact, such development was combined with the emergence of democratic and independent trade unions representing workers at the workplace and at all professional levels. These democratic and independent unions, which assumed a real and effective role in organizing workers and defending their rights and interests, decided to establish GFITUP as an organizational umbrella to coordinate and lead their joint work.
